Advice

Ensure that your sums insured are sufficient to cover all your belongings - if you are underinsured then you are unlikely to be fully covered for the value of your loss.

Write down the details of any loss/theft as soon as it happens - it will help you recall events at a later date and help speed the claims process.

Information requirements

In the event of a claim, insurers often require proof of ownership and some supporting evidence for the claim.  The most common requirements are:

  • Military uniform and equipment - A copy of the charge form and payslip showing that the charges have been deducted from salary
  • Damaged civilian property - An estimate to repair damaged items or written confirmation from a professional dealer that the items are beyond repair. Photographs showing the full extent of the damage are of great assistance
  • Lost/stolen civilian property - Original purchase receipts or instruction booklets/guarantees for electrical goods/cameras etc
  • Lost/stolen, general - It is a policy condition that losses or thefts be reported to civilian, military or regimental police. Please advise the name and full postal address of the police authority concerned and the crime reference

Security advice

  • Theft from motor vehicles - For your own protection, personal belongings must be removed, or locked out of sight in the boot before leaving the vehicle unattended
  • Theft of pedal cycles - Bicycles must be secured when left unattended
  • Theft of property - Do not leave any property unattended
